Unique vegetarian holiday foods

by Sairung:

Anyone like me who’s a vegetarian and can’t cook knows that it’s difficult to find good vegetarian food at restaurants. Most restaurants seem to think a dish that has no meat must be compensated with a higher amount of sugar or salt, resulting in grotesquely sweet or salty food. Sometimes it’s the opposite – they hardly season vegetarian food, especially if it’s vegan, yielding painfully bland meals. On top of those attitudes, many restaurants cheap out on vegetarian dishes by giving little protein, if any at all. I also have dealt with dishes labeled as vegetarian that have non-vegetarian ingredients, like oyster sauce and fish sauce.

Anyway, what I want to talk about in this post are these two unique vegetarian foods at my regular grocery store, cinnamon spiced delicata squash and butternut squash risotto cakes. I call them “unique” because I haven’t seen them being sold anywhere else. They are seasonal, made only during Thanksgiving and Christmas. They are flavorful, properly sweet and rightly salted. The store also makes vegan sage stuffing with mushrooms (shown below), which is flavorful and delicious too.

It’s nice to have good vegetarian food, especially during holiday seasons.
