Creativity is a skill you can practice

by Alan:

Ever heard someone say, “I’m not very creative”? Creativity is not a trait, like hair color and shoe size. It’s a skill. To become more creative, do two things:

1. Practice. There are many ways to do this. For one, start with a familiar object, like a pair of scissors. Then, ask yourself questions and answer them. Think of ways to use or change the object. What can be built using only scissors? If my scissors could talk, what would they say? What would happen if scissors could fly? Why aren’t scissors made of glass?

2. Learn. The more you know about anything and everything, the more you can draw from, the more sources of inspiration you have.

If you personally don’t enjoy being creative, that’s different. That’s a preference related to your personality, and that’s entirely ok. However, if you want to be more creative, you can be! Creativity is a skill you can practice.

I’ve heard drawing is a skill too, but as you can see, it’s not one I’ve practiced.
